Gary DePew, President of Avalon Family Entertainment, is a new media entrepreneur with a wealth of experience producing independent motion pictures. Avalon's recent film JACK AND THE BEANSTALK (starring James Earl Jones. Chevy Chase and Christopher Lloyd) is now available in 25 countries and seven languages and is the basis for Avalon's online virtual world, along with seven more fairy tale favorites in development.
DePew began working for CBS Television while earning his undergraduate degree in Business Administration at USC. After working on multiple TV shows including MASH, Hill Street Blues, Dynasty, Knott's Landing, Quincy and many others, DePew landed a position working with Michael Jackson’s film company MJJ Productions. He soon became Jackson’s production manager, assisting with the creation of music videos for the pop superstar’s BAD album along with a feature length film for Showtime called MOONWALKER in which Jackson co-starred with Oscar winner Joe Pesci.
DePew also worked alongside Jackson in the 3-D film CAPTAIN EO for the Disney theme parks. This project allowed DePew to work directly with Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas in the creation of this technologically complex project which also starred Oscar winner Anjelica Huston.
DePew then set about producing films on his own, beginning with THE WILLIES for Paramount Home Video. He then founded Force Majeure Productions at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles and went on to produce seven feature films including THE HARD TRUTH for HBO Pictures, CHILDREN OF THE CORN III and IV for Disney’s Buena Vista Home Video.
DePew’s reputation for keeping films on schedule and on budget brought him to the attention of FM Entertainment, an international production and distribution company where he became the head of production for several films including THE GOOD LIFE with Sylvester Stallone, Dennis Hopper and Beverly D’Angelo.
Returning to his roots, DePew then set about steadily producing hits in the world of independent cinema. These included several family film titles such as MICHAEL JORDAN: AN AMERICAN HERO, COWBOYS AND ANGELS, and THE RETRIEVERS (with Betty White and Robert Wagner) for The Animal Planet. More recently, DePew produced a documentary film called SLASHER with Director John Landis whose films include ANIMAL HOUSE, THE BLUES BROTHERS and AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON.
